Parent Reviews

Real progress. Real families.

What parents say after their children have trained with Checkmate Toronto.

Adam has been an exceptional online chess coach for our son. Virtual lessons were surprisingly interactive and organized, with detailed game analysis and targeted practice that immediately addressed weaknesses in his play. Our son significantly improved his opening repertoire, adding the London System, Caro-Kann, and King's Indian Defense to his games, while also becoming much stronger in calculation and middle-game planning. His rapid rating increased from around 900 to over 1200, and we've noticed a major boost in both focus and confidence during tournaments. The professionalism, patience, and genuine passion for teaching really stand out.

Our son has grown tremendously as a chess player through these lessons. Before, he mainly focused on quick attacks and would get frustrated in longer games, but now he plays with much more patience and structure. A big focus was placed on endgames, piece activity, and understanding plans instead of memorizing moves, and it's made a noticeable difference in tournament play. He also expanded his openings beyond the Italian Game and now feels comfortable playing positions from the Queen's Gambit and Sicilian Defense. Most importantly, he genuinely looks forward to every lesson and comes away excited to practice.

We've been very impressed with the improvement in our son's chess through these lessons. He used to struggle most in close games, especially when positions became more strategic, but now he plays with much more confidence and patience. A lot of attention was given to reviewing his tournament games, identifying recurring mistakes, and working through practical concepts like pawn structure, piece coordination, and endgame technique. The lessons always felt personalized to exactly what he needed to improve. Beyond the chess progress itself, we've also noticed better focus and discipline during competition. The teaching style is supportive, engaging, and clearly very experienced with kids.

Meet The Coach

Built by a champion. Taught for kids.

Adam — Ontario High School Chess Champion and competitive tournament player — founded Checkmate Toronto to bring serious, structured chess training to families across the GTA.

Most kids' chess instruction tops out at "don't hang your queen." Checkmate Toronto teaches what comes after that: opening principles built on understanding, middlegame plans, endgame technique, and how to actually review your own games and learn from them. The kind of coaching that turns a casual player into a tournament competitor.

Every lesson is built around the student in front of me — their level, their games, their goals. No generic curriculum, no busywork. Just the work that actually moves a player forward.

Frequently Asked

Questions parents actually ask.

It's a full one-hour session — in person or online — where we play a few games, talk through your child's strengths and gaps, and put together a plan for how lessons would work going forward. There's no payment, no commitment, and no awkward sales pitch. If it's a fit, we book the next one. If not, you've still walked away with real feedback on your child's play.
The focus is on kids and beginners up to roughly 1600 rating — from "knows how the pieces move" all the way to confident tournament players. Most students are between 7 and 14, but I work with adults at the same level too. Brand-new players are very welcome.
In-person lessons (in your home) tend to have higher engagement and retention — there's no laptop to wander away from and no Wi-Fi to drop. Online lessons offer total flexibility on scheduling and location, and use interactive online boards so the learning is just as hands-on. Both formats use the same curriculum tailored to your child.
Absolutely — a lot of students start from the very beginning. The first few lessons cover the basics (how each piece moves, the goal of the game, simple checkmates) in a way that's fun rather than intimidating, and we build from there at your child's pace.
Most students do best with one weekly lesson plus 15-30 minutes of practice between sessions on something specific I assign them (puzzles, a study plan, online games to play). Twice-weekly lessons work well for tournament prep or for kids progressing quickly.
Always. Parents are welcome to observe every lesson, in-person or online. For in-home lessons specifically, I ask that a parent or guardian is at home for the duration of the session — both as a matter of policy and so you can see exactly what your child is learning.
Generally anywhere within a 30-minute drive of Scarborough — so most of Toronto's east side, North York, East York, downtown, Markham, Richmond Hill, and the Durham Region (Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa). For families outside that range, online lessons work just as well and cost less.
E-Transfer is the simplest and most common option for ongoing lessons. We'll go over payment after the free intro lesson — only if you decide to continue.
